It's not pretty - but it's all mine (well, not really)
I had surgery on Monday, the 21st to reset my bone again. This time the cut is about twice as large and is stapled with 20 staples instead of a few stitches. I also have a bone from someone else in me. This came as a surprise since I was told I would be having "synthetic material from a jar" put into my body. So imagine my surprise when I was given a paper with a code on it to write a thank you note to my donor family. WHAT?
I'm not sure how I feel about this. I think it could be perceived as a good ol' bait and switch routine. Why not just explain up front? The surgeon came out and told me all about how all the donor's cells are eradicated, so it really is just a piece of "structure" they are using. Really? Do I write a thank you and say thanks for your structure? I think not.
Would I have accepted a donor bone? Sure. I'm giving all mine away when I die, why not take one from somebody else. I just think the donees should be better informed about what's going on. Some people might not be as understanding as I was.
Anyway, it's done. It's ugly and once again, I am recouping at home. Oh and it's Thanksgiving Day -- much to be thankful for around here. Including the bone of someone else helping me heal.
