So I'm standing in the produce aisle
lamenting the price of a bag of apples when my phone rings. OK, not really, I had just walked in the front door of the grocery carrying Keegan's car seat, but that's not nearly as good as lamenting apple prices.
Anyway, I wedge Keegan up against a wall and answer the phone. I hear Jacob screaming, "You are going to be a new grandma. You are going to be a new grandma. Not just to Sophie and Keegan but to another baby."
It was at that second my stomach flipped (and that takes a lot to get my stomach to do gymnastics.) Andi was right behind me and I knew she was not pregnant. Which logically left Zac. Or as I will refer to him in this post -- Unmarried Zac.
I let Keegan slide to the floor as I lean against the wall for support and say, "What are you talking about?" and in response, I get more of the same "new grandma" rhetoric. Shouted in the pitch that only a very excited 10 year old boy can pull off. And I am beginning to wonder why Unmarried Zac would tell Jacob before he told me. How excited Unmarried Zac must be.
Eventually I pull myself together and ask Jacob for further details and he begins to tell me what he knows about my impending status as a Mamaw of three.
He found a bird's nest and it was all torn up and all the eggs were cracked except one - so he had brought it in and was going to try to hatch it like he was the bird's mother which made me the new grandma.
After I listen to his story, I tell him we will discuss it when we get home. However, I'm gonna tell you the truth about this whole situation.
Never was I more happy to see a bird egg surrounded by 6 of my dishtowels and baby worms in my spoon rest waiting for it to be born so they can become a meal for the newborn.
The egg has been relocated to a more suitable home in the bottom of a Pop Tart box under a warming light. The worms are back outside fleeing for their lives. Watch this space for a birth announcement.
