The Ziplock Omelet

The email I received yesterday from my friend, Amy, went something like this -- well, actually it went exactly like this because I am just copying it over to my blog.

This works great! Good for when all your family is together and no one has to wait for their special omelet. Have guests write their name on a quart-size Ziploc freezer bag with permanent marker.

Crack 2 eggs (large or extra-large) into the bag (not more than 2) and shake to combine them. Put out a variety of ingredients such as: cheeses, ham, onion, green pepper, tomato, hash browns, salsa, etc. Each guest adds prepared ingredients of choice to their bag and shake. Make sure to get the air out of the bag and zip it up. Place the bags into rolling, boiling water for exactly 13 minutes. You can usually cook 6-8 omelets in a large pot. For more, make another pot of boiling water.

Open the bags and the omelet will roll out easily. Be prepared for everyone to be amazed. Nice to serve with fresh fruit and coffee cake; everyone gets involved in the process and it's a great conversation piece.

So my first thought was, "gross - boiled eggs." But Bill wants breakfast about 4 nights a week (that happens when you sleep all day), so I am always in the market for new breakfast ideas. This sounded simple enough and if it bombed, it was no big deal. So I started the great Ziplock Omelet experiment by putting ham, cheese, hashbrowns and onions and a bit of hot sauce in the bag for Bill. I beat my egg in a bowl first (I KNOW I strayed from the directions.) I also used 3 eggs despite the warning not to. I'm such a rebel sometimes. I added the eggs and shook it around and my bag then looked like this:

Lovely, right?

**** Note to self - when the recipe says to NOT use 3 eggs, DON'T. New recipe time is no time to be a rebel. After exactly 13 minutes of being boiled, I had to get out a pan to finish cooking Bill's omelet for another few minutes.

However, with Jacob's, I only used 2 eggs and after exactly 13 minutes, straight out of the ziplock bag to his plate I rolled out this perfect omelet.

Now -- Aren't you amazed? I was. They both said they tasted great. This will be wonderful to be able to prepare and leave in the refrigerator for Bill some evening. He can just boil himself an omelet!
