The end of the school year
Just about all the blogs I have read recently have had an entry about the end of school, wrapping up school, dreading summer or something along the lines of school ending and their feelings about it. However, for us the end of the school year never comes. We homeschool year round. 2 weeks of school, 1 week off. 2 on, 1 off. Just like a well oiled machine. Of course we are flexible - one of the main reasons we homeschool. So if we want to do something on a school day, we either make that day up, double the work on another day or best yet, turn that day into a field trip somehow. We use our weeks off to do projects around the house or for church, take trips, visit relatives, go camping or just hang out and do nothing. This schedule works great for us. Even my 5 year old has figured out that he only has 10 days of school, then he gets to play for a LONG time. The kids don't get burned out. They don't lose their focus waiting for a vacation period. We don't spend weeks re-teaching last year's subjects at the beginning of the school year. People ask what grade the kids are in. How do I answer that? Jacob is technically in second grade, but is halfway through his 3rd grade curriculum. Wes and Carly would be in Kindergarten, but they finished that months ago and are deep into their first grade work. I love homeschooling and the freedom that comes along with it. I love this schedule -- and not just because it was my idea. But because it suits our needs perfectly.
