"What a year your family has had."
Can't begin to tell you how many times I've heard that in the last few weeks. I couldn't agree more. It's been an amazing year. I'm sure the "year" people refer to started in April, when Andi suddenly started slurring her words, had a killer headache, couldn't sit up for days without vomiting and was hospitalized with each day bringing more puzzling symptoms.
After speech therapy, 2 weeks later, she still talked like this and now she spends Saturday mornings cheering on the sidelines as Sophie plays soccer. She coaches middle school volleyball and high school swimming. She is awesome and seemingly tireless.
If you didn't ever hear Andi speak when she first got sick, then her recovery might not be as amazing to you as it is to us. But that video does more than document the beginning of her recovery - it documents the goodness of God.
Tomorrow is the 5 month mark since Andi first got sick. The doctors said it could take up to a year for her to get well -- and then she still might have some lingering issues. She still has ongoing effects of having had viral encephalitis. She still gets major headaches, but her neurologist this week gave her 2 additional medicines that appear to be helping those. She still has some days she can't even sit up without being nauseous. Her speech still gets choppy when she is under stress or has a bad headache. And her short term memory makes Nemo's friend, Dorie appear to be Einstein. But even that is getting better.
But she's here and can live with all those things if need be. She's HERE. And I thank God for that every day.
In July, I had a little accident that certainly could have changed my family forever. Instead, just 10 weeks later, I have a few dings and dents that will be with me forever and I know without God watching over me that day, it would certainly be different.
Which brings us to last week when Andi had to have her appendix out - no big deal. She's was back to work a couple of days later.
So yep - it's been quite a year. We've seen the hand of God in action time and time again. We've experienced the kindness of friends over and over. We've been through a lot and there's still three more months to go. Hoping for a quiet end of the year for us - but so thankful to God that He's been with us every day.
