Keep reading and I'll tell you how. But first, let me tell you this: Breast cancer is the 6th leading cause of death of women in the United States. Not counting some kinds of skin cancer, breast cancer in the United States is the most common cancer in women, no matter your race or ethnicity. It is the most common cause of death from cancer among Hispanic women and the second most common cause of death from cancer among white, black, Asian/Pacific Islander, and American Indian/Alaska Native women.

In 2004 (the most recent year numbers are available)186,772 women and 1,815 men developed breast cancer and 40,954 women and 362 men died from breast cancer.

Different people have different warning signs for breast cancer. Some people do not have any signs or symptoms at all. A person may find out they have breast cancer after a routine mammogram. Some warning signs of breast cancer are

New lump in the breast or underarm (armpit).
Thickening or swelling of part of the breast.
Irritation or dimpling of breast skin.
Redness or flaky skin in the nipple area or the breast.
Pulling in of the nipple or pain in the nipple area.
Nipple discharge other than breast milk, including blood.
Any change in the size or the shape of the breast.
Pain in any area of the breast.

Keep in mind that some of these warning signs can happen with other conditions that are not cancer.

What should you be doing? Self Breast exams every month, a Clinical breast exam when you have your yearly physical and a yearly mammogram. All of these things can contribute to an early detection and as with all cancer, the earlier you get a diagnosis, the better your outcome.

As for the good cause part, I'm sure someone you know is participating in the Race for the Cure this month. Support them. Throw a few bucks their way. Skip one Southern Style Chicken Sandwich Meal at McDonald's and give that 5 bucks to somebody who is raising money to help others. I've supported Amy and Gwen and now I find out Andi is walking with her Roller Derby team. At this rate, I'll never get back to the golden arches.

Now, back to the movie question. Here's the deal - Props and Pans is giving away this great set of DVDs as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. If you want a chance to win these movies, go here and enter.
