A letter to Maggie

When I opened my email this morning, I found a comment from Wesley's birth mother, Maggie. It read,

PERRI I THINK YOU ARE A WONDERFUL WOMAN AND MOTHER. WESLEY IS GROWING UP SO FAST AND I AM SO PROUD OF HIM. PLEASE TELL HIM I SAID THAT. YOU BOTH ARE IN MY PRAYERS. GOD BLESS MAGGIE

I let Wes read the comment for himself and he got a big grin on his face. Not a bad way to start your day - knowing someone is praying for you and is proud of you.

As I went to take my shower, I thought that I would just write a letter to Maggie on my blog since I didn't know how to get in touch with her.

However, by the time I got out of the shower, she had sent an email to me, along with some pictures for Wes. I'm going to post them here, so that he will always have access to them. The first one is of Maggie and the very old one are his great-great grandparents.

The little man in the suit is Wesley's biological grandfather. I can really see Wesley in him. Wes-man said he thinks it looks like his smile and his eyes. I think so too.

The two of the little girl are Wesley's biological mother.

Since Maggie reads my blog (which is one reason I blog), I'm going to write a bit about Wes-man for her today.

Wes is a snuggler. He is one of the most loving kids you will ever meet. He is a peacemaker. Wesley is also smart. I have no doubt that he would be on the honor roll if he were in public school. He loves to be tucked in at night and if I don't get in there right away, he will wait awhile and then come out and remind me I haven't been in to tuck him in.

Wesley has asthma and he takes treatments for it daily. He has phobias on top of phobias, but has recently been diagnosed with Sensory Integration Dysfunction. From what I can tell, he has a mild form of it and he will be starting occupational therapy to help him deal with this problem. The psychiatrist also tells me that by the time Wes is 12, he should be over most of these fears. I'm really looking forward to that!

Although Wes doesn't do a lot of things he could because he is afraid of them, he always enjoys watching the others and never seems to mind that he is just watching instead of participating. I, however, wish he would do more things just so that he could enjoy them. I think he would have a whole lot more great memories from his childhood other than standing and watching.

Then again, even as I typed that I thought if he's afraid, he's not really going to enjoy them anyway. He can't help being afraid, so I need to get over wanting him to be what I want and accept him for what he is -- and at this time in his life, that happens to be a kid who is afraid and can't help it.

Wesley only has one eye that works correctly, so although he wears glasses, he doesn't need them to read or see. He basically wears glasses to protect his one eye that works. The optometrist has told me if he were to lose that good eye, he would basically be blind.

Wesley is great with Sophie and Keegan. He loves to play with them and will do whatever Sophie wants to do. She really has him wrapped around her finger.

Wesley loves God and listening to him pray is a very sweet time for me. He thinks of things to pray about that let me know he really pays attention to things that go on around him.

Wesley is tiny - like you. He has been wearing the same size clothes for 3 summers. He loves to swim, ride his bike and play with his Bionicles. He loves to draw and I never get a school paper turned in that doesn't have some sort of doodle on it.

He is a joy and a blessing. I thank God for him every day and for your decision to let us adopt him. Thank you for your prayer for us. We pray for you, too. Thank you for the pictures. They were great.

I hope you know you are welcome here. We will be forever grateful to you.
