Jacob's practice bike ride
While I cleaned the garage today, I talked with Jacob about riding his bike to the park. After about a 45 minute review session on different ways children are kidnapped, what to do if someone tries to grab him, how to call home (including area code), secret code words between us in case someone told him I was hurt and needed him, if someone hurts him and says they will kill us if he tells, the lost puppy story, to not give directions to adults, EVERYTHING that both Kathy and I could think of, I gave him a practice area and told him to go ride around it and come back. He wouldn't budge. We had basically scared the poor kid half to death. Took us another 45 minutes to convince him to leave the garage. Finally, he left and he must have ridden faster than he has ever ridden in his life because he was back in less than half the time it should have taken him - red faced and sweaty in our 60 degree weather. I told him there was no way he had ridden where I said to. So he tried to explain where he rode. While I continued cleaning, Kathy finally rode along with him on my scooter to see where he had ridden and he had gone the right way. It was probably the first time he ever rode up a hill instead of pushing his bike. He must have been riding for all he was worth... and then some. Poor kid - I've scarred him for life.
