Ryan's school conference or alternately titled, "Knocked for a Loop"

Today I went to the conference regarding Ryan's test results and I think I've been in a state of shock in the 8 hours since then.

He took the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children last week. The results are given in both an IQ number as well as a percent score. The percent score puts your results with other children the same age taking the same test and shows where you would rank.

Ryan's highest percent was a 7. Out of a 100% scale. It was extremely disheartening to say the least.

There was surprise that he was able to score average scores in spelling, reading fluency and letter-word identification. They were quick to credit that to the fact that I have worked with him so much and repeated his second grade work.

The resource teacher as well as the psychiatrist who administered the test both say that as he gets older, his ability won't increase, so the gap between where he would be without any disability and where he will probably be will widen.

I took Andi with me and thankfully she was able to ask questions because I'm sure I sat there like somebody had just hit me with a truck. I know that's what it feels like.

Both of the ladies as well as the principal were extremely nice and very supportive in offering any services that we would like to have. I am going to take advantage of their expertise. Ryan will be going down for some testing tomorrow and then starting on Wednesday, he will be going to school for Language Arts and Math. During the Language Arts time block, he will also get to go to Art, Music or Library. He will go to school from 8 - 11:15.

I don't have to enroll him in school and they will not keep attendance on him. If we have something else to do, he just won't go. You really can't ask for more than that from your local public school. We will still do his Science, History and Bible study at home.

We went to each room and met his teachers, found his desk and met the little guys he will be sitting beside. He's not too excited about the whole thing, but did say he was looking forward to making new friends.

I never thought I would have any of my little kids in school, but I honestly think this will be best for Ryan. Tomorrow, he and I will go to Wal-Mart and buy a backpack.

The other kids started their new curriculum today. It already feels like our lives have been in an uproar for the past 2 months and now everything is changing. I pray it's for the better.
