Misdiagnosis irritation
So Jacob woke up with a rash October 11th - almost 7 months ago. I immediately called the doctor and took him in that afternoon. The doctor said, "It's a virus, nothing to do for it, it'll go away." 90 seconds, 159 bucks and we were out the door.
Only it didn't go away. It never got worse, but it turned from red to brown and his skin started looking discolored under the rash. People were asking me if he had that skin disease where he would just lose patches of color. Below is a picture of his chest and his neck.
He said it didn't bother him, but it sure bothered me as I watched his skin change colors. I was so afraid it was going to keep creeping up his neck and cover his face. Finally got him into a dermatologist today who immediately informed me right off the bat that both things my doctor had told me were wrong. Nice.
Then he went on to tell us exactly what it was -- Tinea versicolor. A fungal infection. Lovely to know that's been growing on him for 7 months. We left with a prescription for some cream, body wash and some magical pills.
When I got to the pharmacy to pick up the magical pills, I was met with much resistance and insurance declining to pay for them. Why? Because there were 3 pills and the usual course of treatment is ONE. So after much haggling, they asked if I wanted to just pay cash. Fearing the worst, I asked how much the 3 magical pills were.......
Ten bucks. Really. All that arguing back and forth with the insurance company on the phone for 10 bucks. Crazy people. I plopped down the bucks, took the magic pills and headed home. The doctor said after just 24 hours we would notice an improvement, but it might take several months for his skin to go back to normal.
That's OK -- at least we have the hope that it will!
